Here are some excerpts from Elizabeth Wurtzel's great book, Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America:

Excerpts:

  • 'I looked at him in shock. Why the hell does everyone think the problem is drugs? 'David, what I wouldn't give to have a drug problem.' I say. 'What I wouldn't give for it to be that simple. If I could check in somewhere and come out the other end okay. I'd be thrilled.'"
  • "Even then, I was pretty certain, in my 12 year old mind, that life was one long distraction from the inevitable."
  • "Everything's plastic, we're all going to die sooner or later, so what does it matter. That was my motto.""
  • "...and then one day you realize that your entire life is just awful, not worth living, a horror and a black blot on the white terrain of human existence. One morning you wake up afraid you're going to live."
  • "But then I never had to worry about a crash landing because I never even took off."
  • "Something inside me was not just depressed but dividing, cracking, splintering, pulling me back and forth between my two parents, and occasionally I wished I could walk through a picture window, and have the sharp, broken shards slash me to ribbons so I would finally look like I felt."
  • "They ask me if I've done any drugs in the last 24 hours, and I say no. Then I say I guess I smoked some pot and snorted some coke also, but that was just to make the Ecstasy last longer. I also admit to them I had some beer, maybe a couple of sea breezes in there too. Then the doctor asks if I have a substance abuse problem, and all I can do is laugh."
  • "'I won't do that.' he said. 'I already told you it's your mother's responsibility.' 'Oh *** Daddy. I give up. I can't listen to this anymore.' 'What am I supposed to say?' 'Try, Have a good life. Because this is it for me.' Years later, thinking about this conversation, I will remember, as somebody very sagely said during the parricide trials of the Menendez brothers: Anytime your kids kill you, you are at least partly to blame."
  • "Depression is all about If you loved me you would."
  • "But instead of going to a mental institution, I decided to go to California."
  • "...I wish that every psychiatrist I've ever dealt with could know what it's like to be a patient and to feel desperate. I wish they could know what it's like to wake up every morning afraid you're going to live.'
  • "So the plan was simple: I would earn enough money to pay my mother back, and they I'd kill myself."
  • "On April 8, 1994, as I was completing this book, Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head...Grunge, the musical style that Nirvana did so much to invent and popularize, was described by Newsweek as 'what happens when children of divorce get their hands on guitars.'...Every person who has experienced a severe depression has his own sad, awful tale to tell, his own mess to live through. Sadly, Kurt Cobain will never get that far. Every day I thank God that I did."

Note: This daily sermon for the hearing impaired is dedicated to my good friend, David J. Bishop, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus on July 1, 2021. David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event!

O.J.'s problems are just starting. The following is on the back cover of In Contempt, written by Christopher Darden, one of O.J. Simpson's prosecutors from the 1990s:

"I never got a chance, of course, to cross-examine him. And I didn't want to anymore. I just wanted to talk to him, to make sure he knew he hadn't fooled all of us, and that his 'Dream Team' hadn't fooled most Americans. I wanted to tell him that there was another court that would hear his case one day, with a judge who would separately try racist cops and murderers. A court where everyone will have to account for his actions alone. A court where the only witnesses will be Ronald Goldman and Nicole Brown."
------------------------------------------------

Here is some "Legal" advice from a former member of OJ's "Dream Team":

"You have to hire the best investigators, criminologist, forensic people right now, Shapiro said. You must bring them in immediately to get an independent review of the evidence. The longer you wait, the more the evidence will be disturbed. Shapiro added that he always treated experts well. First class travel, top hotels, the best restaurants. Some lawyers try to economize with tourist class and cheap hotels. That doesn't buy loyalty." (From An American Tragedy, page 29)

Recommended Sermon: Dealing With Lust by Pastor Robert McCurley

The text Pastor McCurley's sermon is Matthew 5:27-30 (Audio): "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."

Here is an interesting quote from Deep Truth: The Lives of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein

"Whenever you run a clandestine operation, you run two things at the same time: you prepare the team for the hit, and you keep it so small there's nobody to spread it all around. And across the hall is a big staff working on what we call special plans. They're preparing the cover story. The cover story is what they want people to believe and to talk about, and to argue about." - From a 1992 speech by Col. Fletcher Prouty, former chief of special operations, Joint Chief of Staff

The text for this sermon is Jeremiah 9:9: "Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?"

In another sermon Dr. Beeke quotes a Puritan as saying that if our biggest problem is not our indwelling sin it might be a sign we are not even saved."

  • "People like Derek ... can be lots of fun. Except when you pop their bubble about their unrealistic grandiosity and their irresponsibility. Then you become a "wet blanket." It's revealing to talk to the "wet blanket" who is married to a practicing child. No job is more tiring." Boundaries, by Cloud & Townsend
  • "Boundaries are a "litmus test" for the quality of our relationships...So what does Debbie, whose husband is an avowed "boundary buster," do? Will her husband carry out his threat to walk out on her? He might. We can't control the other person. But if the only thing keeping Debbie's husband at home is her total compliance, is this a marriage at all?" Boundaries, by Cloud & Townsend

Today in History - October 2

A special thanks to Wikipedia.org for following historical information. The sermons I have chosen from Sermonaudio.com

1789 – The United States Bill of Rights is sent to the various States for ratification.[8]

Recommended sermons and podcasts: American Heritage: Bill of Right, by Dr. Peter A. Lillback

Recommended sermons and podcasts:

1971 – South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu is re-elected in a one-man election.[21]

Here is what Ann Coulter has to say about the Vietnam War:
  • "Vietnam is the Left's favorite war because America lost."
  • "Historical accounts of the Vietnam War are incomprehensible because liberals refuse to admit the failure of their national security strategy. The only important lesson from the Vietnam War is this: Democrats lose wars."
  • "In the great Democratic tradition of taking the nation to war without a plan to win, only the Democrats could have produced Vietnam."
  • "President Lyndon Johnson, who inherited the war when Kennedy was assassinated, viewed the Vietnam War as a method of proving the Democrats could be trusted with foreign policy, which they cannot."
  • "Nixon had been elected in part based on his promise to end the war honorably. He would have done so, too, but for Democrats in Congress,"
  • "A Republican President either wouldn't have started that war, or would have won it pretty fast."
  • 1998 - Pol Pot, Cambodian general and politician, 29th Prime Miniter of Cambodia, dies (and meets our Lord Jesus Christ!) (Source)

2006 – Five Amish girls are murdered in a shooting at a school in Pennsylvania, United States.[30]

Excerpt from this article: "As she stared down the barrel of madman Charles Carl Roberts’ gun, 13-year-old Marian Fisher and her 11-yearold sister, Barbie, bravely pleaded with him to shoot them and spare the eight other girls he had taken hostage, a community leader said yesterday.“Marian said, ‘Shoot me first,’ and Barbie said, ‘Shoot me second,’ ” said midwife Rita Rhoads, a Mennonite who had helped deliver several of the victims."

2018The Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi is assassinated in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.[33]

Here is a great quote from David Rockefeller's Memoirs:

"We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years......It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supernational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.”

"Whenever you run a clandestine operation, you run two things at the same time: you prepare the team for the hit, and you keep it so small there's nobody to spread it all around.
