Note: This daily sermon for the hearing impaired is dedicated to my good friend, David J. Bishop, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus on July 1, 2021. David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event! Note: The following excerpt is from a sermon I listened to in the early 1980s- part of the text for this sermon is Exodus 20:25: "And if thou wilt make an alter of stone, thou shalt not built it of hewn stone, lest thou lift up thy tool upon it and pollute it." The minister who preached this sermon was Rev. Paul den Butter:

"...they have to be very careful that they do not make it (an alter of stone) of hewn stone. And they may not use any tool, any hammer or axe or whatever. They may not use any tool to beautify those stones. They must take simply the rock, the unadorned stones.

"'Ah, but then the alter is not nice, Then the alter is not beautiful. Then it is simply a primitive thing.'

"Well, that's what it may be in our estimation, but it's God's will, is it not? Whether it is a primitive thing or not, it is God's will that the alter will be built of rough stones and that no tool will be used.

"'Ya, but those stones are going to be much nicer if you use some chisel, and if you make some ornaments, some adornments on those stones. The alter is much more beautiful and much more serviceable in your worship service.'

"Ah, but the principle is not what I like, not what I think that is nice and beautiful, not what adorns my worship service, but the principle is what God has said!

"Not my taste determines, but God's command. God has the right to determine what it should be like. And this is a principle nearly almost forgotten. It was perfectly understood by our Reformers. They did not look for innovations, They did not look for all sorts of adornments in the church. Why do people today look for all sorts of things that beautify the worship service and make it more attractive? Why do we see vestments in all sorts of colors?

"I'm convinced it is simply to fill the aching void of the absence of reality. When the Church of Christ was most vigorous in its spiritual life, it had the most simple form of worship. When God converted most people, and when God's children were edified in the worship service, and when the Lord was present in the worship services, it may have been in a barn or in an open field, the worship as such was as simple as simple can be.

"But what do we see today? That in direct proportion to the loss of true spiritual life there is an increase in forms and ceremonies. And the forms and ceremonies are meant to fill the vacancies of true spiritual life. And so Satan is using tools to adorn our alters, but in the meantime he is polluting it. He's corrupting the worship. And men are willing instruments in his hands."

Here is how a friend of mine explained John 1:1 to me:

“Now on John 1:1. The problem is that ancient Greek has no indefinite articles (a, or an). For example, they never say ‘there is a tree.’ They would just say, “There is tree.” If they wanted to be specific they would say, ‘There is the tree.’ That’s the general rule anyway. But anyone who has ever studied any language knows that there are always exceptions to the rules. If an ancient Greek was writing about a specific tree, he didn’t have to put ‘the’ in it to make it definite – you just knew by the context that it was definite, i.e., a specific tree. “The way this applies to John 1:1 is that the Greek literally says: In beginning was the word, and the word was with the God, and God was the word. First, notice that there is no ‘the’ before beginning – and yet the JW Bible (New World Translation) doesn’t say ‘a beginning’ because the context makes it pretty clear that we are talking about the beginning of creation.
“Second, notice that there is no ‘the’ before the second occurrence of ‘God.’ The Jehovah Witnesses insist that this must be translated ‘a god’ because any word without ‘the’ is indefinite, i.e., a god, a tree, etc. And as a general rule, this would be correct. But there is a grammatical reason that the Greeks could not put ‘the’ before the second reference to God – and it gets complicated. Stay with me.
“Greeks did not do sentences like we do. Take the sentence ‘Spot ran home.’ Spot is the subject, ran is the verb, and home is the direct object. We know that because we generally put subjects first toward the front of sentences and before objects. If we change the order and said ‘Home ran spot’, the sentence would be somewhat confusing because it looks like ‘home’ should be the subject of the verb ran – and that doesn’t make sense.
“Greeks didn’t do subjects and objects with word order – they did it with word endings. Very generally speaking, their subjects often ended in os, as in Logos (Word) or Theos (God). If they wanted to make Logos the object, they would spell it Logon. If they wanted to make Theos the object they would spell it Theon. Then you can put it anywhere in the sentence and still know which the subject is. Pretty straightforward.
“You’ll notice that my translation of John 1:1 above reads: ‘God was the word.’ and nearly all Bible translations translate this as ‘The word was God.’ In Greek there is no question whatsoever that ‘the Word’ is the subject and God is the object of that clause – hence, the English translation. ‘The Word was God is correct (I capitalize God to avoid for now the question of whether it should be god or God). That comes next.
“Unfortunately, there is an exception to this rule of os =subject, on = object (there are also other endings for subjects and objects by the way). The exception is this: If two nouns are connected by a ‘to be’ verb (am, are, is, was, etc.) both the subject and the object end with the same endings. It’s crazy, I know but that’s the way it works! So in the clause ‘Theos han ho logos (God was the word) the subject is ho logos (the Word) because it has the definite article (ho=the) and God is the object because, even though it has a subject ending in accordance with Greek grammar – it does not have a definite article. If the Greeks had put ‘the’ in front of God too, it not only would have been poor grammar – we couldn’t tell whether God was the subject or the object.
“So we know that Word is the subject, how do we then know if God in this verse should be definite (i.e. God) or indefinite (i.e. a god)? Context! First the broader context: In John, God is always the one true Jewish God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To rip this one passage out of this broader context and assume that in this verse it must be ‘a god’ because there was no definite article is absurd. Second, the immediate context - the passage says ‘the Word was with the God’ (Note the ‘the’) and the Word was God. The immediate context – in fact, the exact same sentence – makes it perfectly clear that John is speaking of God and not a god.
“Now, a note on consistency. While JWs insist that Theos (God) in John 1:1 must be translated ‘a god’ because it doesn’t have a definite article (the), it is important to note that The New World Translation translates Theos as God (capital G) in John 1:6, 12, 13 and 18 – even though none of those verses put the ‘the’ in front of Theos!

“Finally, even radical liberal Greek scholars who don’t believe in Jesus deity acknowledge that John is calling Jesus God (not a god). The JW’s are simply factually in error on this one. “By the way, Revelation 1:8 in The New World Translation reads ‘I am Alpha and Omega, says Jehovah God…’ This is really interesting, because Revelation 22:12-16 says ‘Look, I am coming quickly … I am Alpha and Omega, … I Jesus sent my angel to bear witness…’ In other words, chapter 1 of the New World Translation says God is the Alpha and Omega — but chapter 22 says that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega. I once heard of a Jehovah Witness who got saved after this was pointed out the him.”

Here is an excerpt from Rev. Paul den Butter's Sermon on Total Depravity. This sermon makes reference to Augustine's role in the early church:

"It is commonly stated that the central doctrine of the Reformation was the doctrine of justification by faith. Now it is of course true that justification by faith was one of the major issues of the Reformation. But more basic than the justification of the ungodly by faith alone, is the doctrine of man's depravity and consequently the bondage of his will. Martin Luther, one of the great reformers, has acknowledged this fact in his discussion with the great humanist Erasmus. Erasmus was a roman catholic, though he had quite a bit of criticism of the Roman Catholic Church, he never broke ranks with the Roman Catholic Church, and he saw need for reformation, but he never broke ranks with the Roman Catholic Church. He was a defender of much of the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. Well, this humanist defended the doctrine which is still taught by Roman, namely that man is not totally depraved. But that man still has a freedom in the use of his will. And writing a treatise on the freedom of man's will Erasmus defended that Roman Catholic position of semi-pelagianism Luther replied in his famous book the bondage of the will. and in that book Luther makes the statement, 'you alone have attacked the real thing, that is, the essential issue. You have not worried me with extraneous issues about the papacy, purgatory, indulgences and such like, trifles, rather than issues, in respect of which almost all to date have sought my blood...you, and you alone, have seen the hinge on which the vital turns, and aimed for the vital spot. For that I heartily thank you, for it is more gratifying to me to deal with this issue, and the issue is 'Does man have a free will or not.' And Luther has seen that on this issue everything hinges. Is man totally depraved or not? Is man completely corrupt or has he still some good within. now on this question there have been 3 positions during the history of the church. There was first of all Pelagianism, let me give you a little bit of church history also tonight. There was in the first place Pelagianism, named after a British monk, Pelagius, who preached in Rome from 401 to 409. ad. and Pelagius said every man comes into this world his own Adam. every man is born in a state of innocency. and he is endowed with the full ability to make his own choice and to decide whether he will be virtuous or vicious. So, Pelagius did not believe, not at all, in man's corruption. and in man's depraved nature. man was born in a state of innocency and man could determine whether he would be a virtuous person or a vitious person. Of course, Pelagius was honest enough to admit that man was doing sin but he did not sin because the source was within his heart no, no he sinned because he imitated other people that committed sin. There is also a second position called semi-pelagianism that goes not so far as pelagianism. . Pelagius said man is innocent. man is not depraved at all. He can make himself depraved, but he is not. Semi-pelagianism said sure man is depraved, but not completely depraved, man is sick, but he is not dead. and if man will only use those faculties which he still has and if he moves in the direction of God then God's grace will come, and he will lead him the rest of the way. Man is deformed yes, man is sick sure but man is still able to use his free will and using his free will he must make the first move and take the first step and God will do the rest. That is Semipelagians which was adopted by the Roman Catholic Church and by Arminianism, and by much of modern evangelism. But then there is a third position which is sometimes called Augustinianism, named after Augustine, a church father, who brought out of the word of God the doctrine of original sin. and of the need of divine grace in the entire complex of Gods saving activities. Augustine showed from the word of God that man is not depraved but that man is totally depraved. And for that reason, no activity of man can save him. or can make the beginning of salvation. but that grace and grace alone can save man. Well, these are the three positions, and it is not difficult t determine which positions our father held when they confessed total depravity."
