The best sermon I know of on the Christian's responsibility to secular authority (aka, the government), is Dr. David P. Murray's When Government Tries to Be God.

But maybe it is past time for true Christian churches to give up their tax exemption status and focus on preaching the gospel, not building religious empires!

It's a shame that Aaron Bushnell can't come back to life - even if for a minute or two - to tell us all what he found once his heart stopped beating. My guess he was thinking he was going to be a hero - in this world and the one to come - for killing himself in such a painful way. He no doubt thought that the pain of the fire would only last a short time and then he would welcomed into paradise by 70 virgins where he would live happily ever after. It must have been a shock to him when the fire didn't go out! And an even greater shock to find out it never would go out!!!

The following quote from Puritan Ralph Venning's book, The Sinfulness of Sin, I have modified it slightly to fit the current tragedy of Aaron Bushnell:

"It's as if Aaron Bushnell should say to the Lord in the Day of Judgment, 'Have mercy on me.'
'Have mercy upon you?' says God. 'No, I will have no mercy upon you. There was a time when you might have had mercy without judgment, but now you shall have judgment without mercy. Depart! Depart!'
If Aaron Bushnell should then beg and say, 'Lord, if I must depart, let it be from Thy throne of judgment, but not from Thee.'

I see you acting the suicide this morning, and I picture myself standing at your bedside and hearing your cries, and knowing that you are dying without hope. I cannot bear that. I think I am standing by your coffin now, and looking into your clay-cold face, and saying. "This man despised Christ and neglected the great salvation." I think what bitter tears I shall weep then, if I think that I have been unfaithful to you, and how those eyes fast closed in death, shall seem to chide me and say, "Minister, I attended the music hall, but you were not in earnest with me; you amused me, you preached to me, but you did not plead with me. Note: This daily sermon for the hearing impaired is dedicated to my good friend, David J. Bishop, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus on July 1, 2021. David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event!
