Serious Preaching in a Comedy Culture

Serious Preaching in a Comedy Culture, by Dr. David P. Murray

The text for the above sermons is 1 Corinthians 5:10,11: "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men..."

Here is another recommended podcast: How the Mental Health Industry Misses the Mark, by Dave Wheaton of The Christian Worldview. Dave Weaton interviews Greg Gifford, the author of Lies My Therapist Told Me

Here are some excerpts from Elizabeth Wurtzel's great book, Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America:

  • 'I looked at him in shock. Why the hell does everyone think the problem is drugs? 'David, what I wouldn't give to have a drug problem.' I say. 'What I wouldn't give for it to be that simple. If I could check in somewhere and come out the other end okay. I'd be thrilled.'"
  • "Even then, I was pretty certain, in my 12 year old mind, that life was one long distraction from the inevitable."
  • "Everything's plastic, we're all going to die sooner or later, so what does it matter. That was my motto."
  • "...and then one day you realize that your entire life is just awful, not worth living, a horror and a black blot on the white terrain of human existence. One morning you wake up afraid you're going to live."
  • "But then I never had to worry about a crash landing because I never even took off."
  • "Something inside me was not just depressed but dividing, cracking, splintering, pulling me back and forth between my two parents, and occasionally I wished I could walk through a picture window, and have the sharp, broken shards slash me to ribbons so I would finally look like I felt."
  • "They ask me if I've done any drugs in the last 24 hours, and I say no. Then I say I guess I smoked some pot and snorted some coke also, but that was just to make the Ecstasy last longer. I also admit to them I had some beer, maybe a couple of sea breezes in there too. Then the doctor asks if I have a substance abuse problem, and all I can do is laugh."
  • "'I won't do that.' he said. 'I already told you it's your mother's responsibility.' 'Oh *** Daddy. I give up. I can't listen to this anymore.' 'What am I supposed to say?' 'Try, Have a good life. Because this is it for me.' Years later, thinking about this conversation, I will remember, as somebody very sagely said during the parricide trials of the Menendez brothers: Anytime your kids kill you, you are at least partly to blame."
  • "Depression is all about If you loved me you would."
  • "But instead of going to a mental institution, I decided to go to California."
  • "...I wish that every psychiatrist I've ever dealt with could know what it's like to be a patient and to feel desperate. I wish they could know what it's like to wake up every morning afraid you're going to live.'
  • "So the plan was simple: I would earn enough money to pay my mother back, and they I'd kill myself."
  • "On April 8, 1994, as I was completing this book, Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head...Grunge, the musical style that Nirvana did so much to invent and popularize, was described by Newsweek as 'what happens when children of divorce get their hands on guitars.'...Every person who has experienced a severe depression has his own sad, awful tale to tell, his own mess to live through. Sadly, Kurt Cobain will never get that far. Every day I thank God that I did."

TRUMP JUST REPOSTED JFK’S MOST TERRIFYING SPEECH

Big Daddy: TRUMP JUST REPOSTED JFK’S MOST TERRIFYING SPEECH — AND THE DEEP STATE IS PANICKING JFK saw it coming. In 1961. And now, Trump has just made sure 300 million Americans see it, too. The speech everyone’s talking about: Kennedy’s address to the American Newspaper Publishers Association, April 27, 1961.

In 1971 a history teacher set out to prove conspiracy theorists wrong. What he discovered led to him writing None Dare Call it Conspiracy.

Here is a quote from the late David Rockefeller, thanking the major media for looking the other way while the Deep State set out to destroy America:

“We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost 40 years......It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supernational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries.” - ― David Rockefeller (Source)

The Bible says the time will come when the Antichrist will come to power, and no one will be able to buy or sell unless they have the Mark of the Beast:

  • Revelation 13:16-18: "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."
  • Revelation 14:9-11: "And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name."

And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be. And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest. Then the angel of the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years? And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words. So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction. Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem. Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the LORD shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem. Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. And the LORD shewed me four carpenters. Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it."]

Here is a Hymn Based on Psalm 96: Sing to the Lord, Sing His Praise

Sing to the Lord, Sing His Praise

Psalm 96: "O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people. For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens. Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts. O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. 0Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth."

David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event! 1974Watergate scandal: The United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled that President Richard Nixon did not have the authority to withhold subpoenaed White House tapes and they order him to surrender the tapes to the Watergate special prosecutor.

Here is a quote from Deep Truth: The Lives of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, by Adrian Havill:

"Whenever you run a clandestine operation, you run two things at the same time: you prepare the team for the hit, and you keep it so small there's nobody to spread it all around. And across the hall is a big staff working on what we call special plans. They're preparing the cover story. The cover story is what they want people to believe and to talk about, and to argue about." - From a 1992 speech by Col. Fletcher Prouty, former chief of special operations, Joint Chief of Staff, as quoted in Deep Truth: The Lives of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein

Note: This is a good book. Adrian Havill makes the case that Bob Woodward's part in exposing the Watergate scandal may not have been so much great journalism as it was the Deep State taking out a sitting President - Richard Nixon. Just like they did with President Kennedy, and like they have been trying to do with President Trump. Read it and see what you think!

  • "If you knew that you could live in luxury for the rest of your life but that by doing so it would absolutely destroy the future of your children, your grandchildren, and your great-grandchildren, would you do it? Well, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation. Over the past several decades we have stolen $15 trillion dollars from future generations so that we could enjoy a dramatically inflated level of prosperity. Our 15 trillion dollar party has been a lot of fun, but what we have done to our children and our grandchildren has been beyond criminal. We ran up the greatest mountain of debt in the history of the planet and we are sticking them with the bill. Sadly, both political parties have been responsible for the big spending that has been going on." (The Economiccollapseblog.com)
  • "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discover it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship and then  a monarchy."

 Now With Joyful Exultation

Psalm 95: "O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

Recommended Sermon: Dealing With Lust by Pastor Robert McCurley

The text Pastor McCurley's sermon is Matthew 5:27-30 (Audio): "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."

"But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep." - 1 Corinthians 11:28-30
