The Rich Man and Lazurus

The text for this sermon is Luke 16:19-31:

19"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."

"Holiness is the Beuty of earth and of heaven. They who jeer and scoff at holiness and rejoice that they are none of the holy ones, might as well make bone fires, ring the bells, and give thanks that they shall never be saved. For if they are not holy, saved they cannot be." - Ralph Venning, The Sinfulness of Sin

Daily Sermon for the Hearing Impaired: Characteristics of Overcomers

Characteristics of Overcomers, by Joe W Allen [Text: 1 John]

Note: This daily sermon for the hearing impaired is dedicated to my good friend, David J. Bishop, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus on July 1, 2021. David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21 (Audio)]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event!

Westminster Shorter Catechism Q & A #16-20

  The following is from thewestminsterstandard.org:

Q. 16. Did all mankind fall in Adam’s first transgression?

A. The covenant being made with Adam, not only for himself, but for his posterity; all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first transgression.

Q. 17. Into what estate did the fall bring mankind?
A. The fall brought mankind into an estate of sin and misery.

Q. 18. Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell?
A. The sinfulness of that estate whereinto man fell, consists in the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the want of original righteousness, and the corruption of his whole nature, which is commonly called original sin; together with all actual transgressions which proceed from it.

Q. 19. What is the misery of that estate whereinto man fell?
A. All mankind, by their fall, lost communion with God, are under his wrath and curse, and so made liable to all miseries in this life, to death itself, and to the pains of hell for ever.

Q. 20. Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?
A. God having, out of his mere good pleasure, from all eternity, elected some to everlasting life, did enter into a covenant of grace, to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery, and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a Redeemer.

Satan Considering the Saints! - Charles Spurgeon Sermon

Compel Them to Come In, by Pastor Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)

Here is an excerpt from this sermon:

"My brother, I entreat you, I entreat you stop and consider. Do you know what it is you are rejecting this morning? You are rejecting Christ, your only Saviour. "Other foundation can no man lay;" "there is none other name given among men whereby we must be saved." My brother, I cannot bear that ye should do this, for I remember what you are forgetting: the day is coming when you will want a Saviour. It is not long ere weary months shall have ended, and your strength begin to decline; your pulse shall fail you, your strength shall depart, and you and the grim monster—death, must face each other. What will you do in the swellings of Jordan without a Saviour? Death-beds are stony things without the Lord Jesus Christ. It is an awful thing to die anyhow; he that hath the best hope, and the most triumphant faith, finds that death is not a thing to laugh at. It is a terrible thing to pass from the seen to the unseen, from the mortal to the immortal, from time to eternity, and you will find it hard to go through the iron gates of death without the sweet wings of angels to conduct you to the portals of the skies. It will be a hard thing to die without Christ. I cannot help thinking of you. I see you acting the suicide this morning, and I picture myself standing at your bedside and hearing your cries, and knowing that you are dying without hope. I cannot bear that. I think I am standing by your coffin now, and looking into your clay-cold face, and saying. "This man despised Christ and neglected the great salvation." I think what bitter tears I shall weep then, if I think that I have been unfaithful to you, and how those eyes fast closed in death, shall seem to chide me and say, "Minister, I attended the music hall, but you were not in earnest with me; you amused me, you preached to me, but you did not plead with me. You did not know what Paul meant when he said, 'As though God did beseech you by us we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.'" - from Spurgeon' Sermon Compel Them To Come In

Meet the Real God: Street Preaching at Belfast Pride 2023, by Paul Flyn

The text for this sermon is Nahum 1:2-7:

"God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."

I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts."

Daily Quotes for Saturday, July 29, 2023

"No person appears less likely to be saved than your religious unbelievers. They wear an Armour of proof. You cannot tell them anything new and striking, their heads are helmeted with religious knowledge; you cannot touch their hearts, for they wear the breast-plate of gospel-hardening." - Pastor Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892)

From Spurgeon's Sermon Notes:

"A lady, who heard [George] Whitfield, in Scotland, preach upon the words, 'And the door was shut,' being placed near two dashing young men, but at a considerable distance from the pulpit, witnessing their mirth; and overheard one say, in a low tone to the other, 'Well, what if the door be shut. Another will open.' Thus they turned off the solemnity of the text. Mr. Whitfield had not proceeded far when he said, 'It is possible there may be some careless, trifling person here today, who may ward off the force of this impressive subject, by lightly thinking, 'What matter if the door be shut. Another will open.' The two young men were paralyzed and looked at each other. Mr. Whitfield proceeded: 'Yes, another will open. And I will tell you what door it will be: it will be the door of the bottomless pit! - the door of hell! - the door which conceals from the eyes of angels the horrors of damnation!'" (From Spurgeon's Sermon Notes)

But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. Daily Sermon for the Hearing Impaired: The Love of Inhospitality

The Love of Inhospitality, by Joe W Allen [Text: 2 John]

The Exceeding Sinfulness of Sin

The Exceeding Sinfulness of Sin, by Dr. Michael Barrett

The following quotes are taken from Ralph Venning's book, The Sinfulness of Sin, first published in 1667:

"This night your soul may be taken from you, and you may be in hell tomorrow."
"As men sow in this seed time they shall reap in that harvest."

"There will be no sleeping in hell."

"'But you only have to repent' says sin, 'God will forgive you.' To this we must say that he who has promised forgiveness to those who repent, has not promised repentance to them that sin."

"They will be in this like the burning bush, which was burnt with fire, but not consumed. As the church was on earth, so sinners will be in hell."

"Most of the past time in the world is lost time, but sinning time, or time spent in sin, is worst than lost, for it must be accounted for."

"To pay so dear a price for so vile a commodity. To pay according to the rate of heaven and be put off with hell."

"Will you be damned? Can you think calmly of going to hell? Have you no pity on your poor soul?"

"Holiness is the Beuty of earth and of heaven. They who jeer and scoff at holiness and rejoice that they are none of the holy ones, might as well make bone fires, ring the bells, and give thanks that they shall never be saved. For if they are not holy, saved they cannot be."

"To pluck out you right eye or cut off your right hand would be a pleasure in comparison to being damned in hell. A burning fever is nothing to burning in hell. Of all the miseries which have been undergone by all men it would be nothing in hell."

"If thunder, lightening, and earthquakes make men afraid and shrink together, what will hell do? If the throbbing of a toothache or gnawing of gout puts men to excruciating pain, what will hell do?"

The Insanity of Luther: The Holiness of God with R.C. Sproul

Recommended sermon: Justification of the Ungodly by Faith Alone, by Dr. Joel Beeke

The texts for Dr. Beeke's sermon are:

  • Romans 3:28: "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."
  • Romans 5:6: "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly."

Please take the time to listen to Dr. Beeke's Testimony.

Here is a great book to read after (or before!) listening to Dr. Beeke's sermon on Justification: Faith Alone: The Evangelical Doctrine of Justification, by R. C. Sproul

Here are some quotes from the late RC Sproul (1939-2017):

  • "While God-given, the conscience has certain limitations in its ability to discern right from wrong. To hold a razor's edge, it must constantly be informed by the Word of God."
  • "We often hear the question, 'What happens to the poor innocent native in Africa who never had an opportunity to hear the gospel?'...Nothing happens to the poor innocent native who never had an opportunity to hear the gospel. Innocent people don't need salvation."
  • "Does saving faith require a trust in the righteousness of Christ alone as the grounds of our justification? Or may a person have a different view of the gospel and still be a Christian?"
  • "It is to Rome's credit, in my opinion, that she placed anathema on what she believed to be a false and heretical gospel. If sola fide is a distortion of the biblical gospel, surely it deserves such anathema. If the Reformers were preaching and teaching a false gospel, then they were apostate and deserved the labels put on them by Vatican I, 'schismatics and heretics.'"
  • "The Reformation was waged, not over the question of justification by faith, but over the issue of justification by faith alone. It was the sola of sola fide that was the central point of dispute."
  • "I said that if justification by faith alone is essential for salvation, and if Rome rejects justification by faith alone, then the conclusion follows by resistless logic that Rome rejects an essential truth of Christianity. When I use the word, if, here, I do so for the sake of the present argument. In my mind, there is no if about it. I am convinced, as were the Reformers, that justification by faith alone is essential to the gospel, and that Rome clearly rejects it."
  • "Agreement between Rome and Evangelicals can be reached in several ways. One is for Evangelicals to abandon their historic position of sola fide. A second is for Rome to adopt sola fide as its official doctrine. The third is for agreement to be reached that sola fide is not essential to the gospel."
  • "To indicate that the Roman view is inadequate, or it falls short, is a gentle criticism. In my estimation, it is too gentle. One could construe this statement to mean that, though it has shortcomings and is less than adequate, the Roman 'version of the gospel' is still just that, a 'version of the gospel.' The New Testament makes it clear that there is only one gospel. An 'inadequate' gospel is not the gospel. A gospel that 'falls short' of its essence is not a true gospel and must be vigorously rejected."
  • "I can imagine no Reformed theologian from the 16th century to the present day suggesting that the Roman Catholic view is not a serious threat to the gospel."
