R. C. Sproul: Kierkegaard: The Consequence of Ideas with R.C. Sproul

Here are some quotes from Dr. Sproul's books:
  • "While God-given, the conscience has certain limitations in its ability to discern right from wrong. To hold a razor's edge, it must constantly be informed by the Word of God."
  • "We often hear the question, 'What happens to the poor innocent native in Africa who never had an opportunity to hear the gospel?'...Nothing happens to the poor innocent native who never had an opportunity to hear the gospel. Innocent people don't need salvation."
  • "Does saving faith require a trust in the righteousness of Christ alone as the grounds of our justification? Or may a person have a different view of the gospel and still be a Christian?" (From Faith Alone)
  • "It is to Rome's credit, in my opinion, that she placed anathema on what she believed to be a false and heretical gospel. If sola fide is a distortion of the biblical gospel, surely it deserves such anathema. If the Reformers were preaching and teaching a false gospel, then they were apostate and deserved the labels put on them by Vatican I, 'schismatics and heretics.'" (from Faith Alone)
  • "The Reformation was waged, not over the question of justification by faith, but over the issue of justification by faith alone. It was the sola of sola fide that was the central point of dispute." (From Faith Alone)
  • "I said that if justification by faith alone is essential for salvation, and if Rome rejects justification by faith alone, then the conclusion follows by resistless logic that Rome rejects an essential truth of Christianity. When I use the word, if, here, I do so for the sake of the present argument. In my mind, there is no if about it. I am convinced, as were the Reformers, that justification by faith alone is essential to the gospel, and that Rome clearly rejects it." (from Faith Alone.)
  • "Agreement between Rome and Evangelicals can be reached in several ways. One is for Evangelicals to abandon their historic position of sola fide. A second is for Rome to adopt sola fide as its official doctrine. The third is for agreement to be reached that sola fide is not essential to the gospel." (From Faith Alone).
  • "To indicate that the Roman view is inadequate, or it falls short, is a gentle criticism. In my estimation, it is too gentle. One could construe this statement to mean that, though it has shortcomings and is less than adequate, the Roman 'version of the gospel' is still just that, a 'version of the gospel.' The New Testament makes it clear that there is only one gospel. An 'inadequate' gospel is not the gospel. A gospel that 'falls short' of its essence is not a true gospel and must be vigorously rejected." (From Faith Alone).
  • "I can imagine no Reformed theologian from the 16th century to the present day suggesting that the Roman Catholic view is not a serious threat to the gospel." (From Faith Alone).
  • "The Bible teaches that there are degrees in hell, and that some sins are punished more severely by God than others (John 19:11, Luke 12:47-48)...we must keep in mind that the punishment for adultery will be more severe than the punishment for lust."

Quotes:

  • "You should view these politicians with the deepest contempt you can possibly imagine.  What they are doing to this country, what they are doing to our finances - there is not a criminal in any federal prison, state prison, city or county jail with respect to financial crimes of any sort who collectively could have done the kind of damage that Barack Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and yes, willing, timid, gutless Republicans have done to this country! To your future, to your children and your grandchildren. What they are doing is with malice and with forethought." - Mark Levin (source)
  •  "If you knew that you could live in luxury for the rest of your life but that by doing so it would absolutely destroy the future of your children, your grandchildren, and your great-grandchildren, would you do it? Well, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation. Over the past several decades we have stolen $15 trillion dollars from future generations so that we could enjoy a dramatically inflated level of prosperity. Our 15 trillion dollar party has been a lot of fun, but what we have done to our children and our grandchildren has been beyond criminal. We ran up the greatest mountain of debt in the history of the planet and we are sticking them with the bill. Sadly, both political parties have been responsible for the big spending that has been going on." (The Economiccollapseblog.com)
  • "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discover it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship and then  a monarchy."

Recommended sermon:  The Mark of the Beast - Is it Unfolding Before Our Eyes? by Rev. Noel Hughes

The Bible says:

Revelation 13:16-18 says: "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

And a closely related text is Revelation 14:9-11"And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name."

The Love of the World, by Joe W Allen [Text: I John]

Note: This daily sermon for the hearing impaired is dedicated to my good friend, David J. Bishop, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus on July 1, 2021. David was the inspiration for me to begin posting links to sermons for the hearing impaired. David's not deaf anymore. And the first words he heard were from our Lord Jesus, saying to him, "Well done, David, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of thy Lord!" [Matthew 25:21]

Here is one of the last pictures David sent to me before he died. He was a big sports fan and LOVED the Seattle Seahawks! He was also a BIG baseball fan. I'm sure if David had been able to hear he would have loved the song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game! But David loved our Lord Jesus much, much, much more than any sporting event!

      Westminster Shorter Catechism Q & A #56-60

       The following is from thewestminsterstandard.org:

      Q. 56. What is the reason annexed to the third commandment?
      A. The reason annexed to the third commandment is, that however the breakers of this commandment may escape punishment from men, yet the Lord our God will not suffer them to escape his righteous judgment.

      Q. 57. Which is the fourth commandment?
      A. The fourth commandment is, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath-day, and hallowed it.

      Q. 58. What is required in the fourth commandment?
      A. The fourth commandment requireth the keeping holy to God such set times as he hath appointed in his Word; expressly one whole day in seven, to be a holy Sabbath to himself.

      Q. 59. Which day of the seven hath God appointed to be the weekly Sabbath?
      A. From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, God appointed the seventh day of the week to be the weekly Sabbath; and the first day of the week, ever since, to continue to the end of the world, which is the Christian Sabbath.

      Q. 60. How is the Sabbath to be sanctified?

      A. The Sabbath is to be sanctified by a holy resting all that day, even from such worldly employments and recreations as are lawful on other days; and spending the whole time in the public and private exercises of God’s worship, except so much as is to be taken up in the works of necessity and mercy.

Just A Gardiner? Meting the Risen Christ, by Rev. Lawrence J. Bilkes

The text for this sermon is John 20:1-18

"The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her."

I Recently saw someone wearing a shirt that had the following words on the back: "Don't Open. Dead Inside."

I should have taken the opportunity to talk to this person, or at least comment on what was written on her sweatshirt, and see if that would lead to an opening to share the gospel with her. I might have told her about another slogan I saw recently that read: "Exposure to the SON prevents burning!"

The following quote is from Spurgeon's Sermon Notes: "As someone has wisely said 'We shall have to give account for idle silence as well as idle speech.'"

    • Daily Sermon for the Hearing Impaired: The Stages of Spiritual Growth

The Stages of Spiritual Growth, by Joe W Allen [Text: I John]

The following sermons are by Dr. Stephen Pollock. His text is Psalm 139 (Audio)

        A Malediction

The judges sat outside the law, And in their pride no evil saw
In setting teeth to Satan's jaw, And feeding him our children.

A curse, a curse, the law it cries, A curse, a curse, on mankind's pride
A curse on him who would deny, God's image in mankind.

When viewed in terms of cost and ease, An unborn child is a disease
A holocaust soon fit to please, Our own convenience.

Torn from out their mother's womb, Denied the sky, denied the tomb
Conceived in lust to their own ruin, A sacrifice to pleasure.

A Curse, a curse their blood cries out, A curse, a curse the heavens shout!
A curse on him who dares to flout, God's image in mankind.

The doctors with their blood-red hands, Who loved their money more than man.
With greed their god they lay their plan, The butchers of mankind.

Oh, rid us of this evil Lord, And turn our hearts by cross or sword
Our nation cannot long afford, To live beneath your anger.

A Curse, a curse upon their heads, O, save them Lord, or slay them dead!
And fill our country with your dread, And turn away your anger.
